Yanmei embodies the saying ‘curiosity killed the cat’. She has an insatiable curiosity and always wants to know more about everything, including the places that her parents were born. Though, she’s accepted that she’ll never see those places. Being a ‘halfbreed’ and not immune to the scornful behavior of those who were xenophobic, Yanmei is rather sensitive about her past and will easily take offense if part of her mixed heritage is slighted.
This also made her a somewhat tough person with a thick skin and, when necessary, aggressive streak. Despite the fact that her father is the makeshift leader of their community, she often times goes exploring to map new areas or update old ones. Because of her past, she doesn’t do too well with social situations. In many ways and for a variety of reasons she wasn’t well accepted and frequently has trouble with people, especially the opposite sex.

Yanmei was born to Toral and Jie Cevdak on the planet that both had crashed on 22 and 7 years ago, respectively. Because she didn’t have the benefit of a universal translator, she grew up bi-lingual, learning both Cardassian and Mandarin from her parents and then later standard English from the other human colonists. Her Bajoran is still sketchy, however she can communicate well with the Bajoran residents.
Despite the unique situation that their informal colony had, Yanmei had a good childhood. With some basic survival skills and supplies from the ship her mother crashed on, the Jiuxing, they were able to build a community and expand on it. The lack of luxuries that civilization affronted people did slate her for a more physically demanding lifestyle, as did the undertone of tension between some Humans and some Cardassians.
By her 20th birthday in 2372, they had crops, gardens, and a school for the other children.
